How to get your teeth white (and keep them that way)!

Whether you’re hoping for a dream job or a dream date, you’ll want your smile to be its whitest. Here’s our five-step guide to getting (and keeping) your teeth as white as they can be.

Step 1: Stop the bad habits.

There are plenty of teeth-staining habits to choose from, including smoking, drinking tea, coffee and red wine and eating staining foods such as tomato-based sauces and curries. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t do any of them, but who could live without the odd tikka masala? Realistically, just target the worst offenders and either eliminate them from your diet, or drastically reduce their frequency, to stop teeth stains forming or getting worse. When you do occasionally indulge, rinse with water immediately afterwards to minimise any damage.

Step 2: Boost your hygiene routine.

Sure, you brush twice daily and maybe even floss every now and then, but could you do better? To supercharge your oral hygiene, we recommend you brush with an electric toothbrush and whitening toothpaste twice daily for two minutes each time and floss every day. You should also brush your tongue, to reduce the bacteria in your mouth. Finally, rinse with fluoridated mouthwash after meals to keep your teeth out of harm’s way between brushings (we recommend Colgate FluoriGard for daily cavity protection).

Step 3: See a pro.

Remember those staining habits we discussed in Step 1? Part of the problem is that the stains they leave can’t simply be brushed away. That’s why visiting your trusty hygienist twice a year is essential if you want your smile to look its best. Not only will we give your mouth a deep clean, but we also use the latest AirFlow technology, which uses a fine stream of air mixed with water and fine powder to polish your teeth and remove stains and plaque/biofilm better than traditional tools. It’s a great way to prepare for professional teeth whitening and also to maintain your whitening results.

Step 4: Sleep on it.

Speaking of professional teeth whitening, it is the number one way to get your teeth dramatically whiter than they’ve been in years – or indeed ever were. Dentist-prescribed whitening treatments involve you wearing bespoke gel trays, which can be worn overnight to manage sensitivity or in approved one-hour sessions. Results can be seen after 10 – 14 applications and the tray can be reused as often as desired. Either way, your results will be far more impressive than with over-the-counter remedies. Just make sure you go to a registered dental professional for your whitening and not a discount cowboy on the high street. That’s not just dangerous – it’s illegal!

Step 5: Repeat steps 1-4.

Now you’ve got a flash new smile, how do you stop it from reverting to the way it was?
